Laird Thermal Systems Announces New Line of Micro-Thermoelectric Cooling Systems for Next-Generation Optoelectronic Packages

Laird Thermal Systems introduces the OptoTEC™ MBX series, a new line of micro-thermoelectric cooling systems for high-performance, space-saving optoelectronic applications. Utilizing the latest thermoelectric materials and advanced process automation, the MBX series offers innovative configurations designed for integration into TO-Can, TOSA, and Butterfly packages. The latest design innovation includes a compact size, with the smallest model measuring only 1.5 x 1.1 mm and profiles as thin as 0.65 mm. This ensures exceptional cooling performance within given space constraints with the lowest possible energy consumption.

The MBX series has high heat dissipation capacities up to 43 W/cm² and temperature differences up to 82°C at an ambient temperature of 50ºC. By ensuring efficient thermal management and precise temperature stabilization, the MBX series protects optoelectronics operating in high-temperature environments, such as laser diodes, optical transceivers, LiDAR, infrared sensors (IR), and high-power Indium Phosphide (InP) VCSELs.

“Advances in the optical communication industry, driven by applications such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, require superior temperature stabilization for laser diodes in high-speed optical transceivers. The MBX series is the ideal solution to ensure optical devices maintain consistent wavelength, reduced crosstalk, and extended operational lifespan. Our significant investment in a high-precision automation production line reflects our commitment to process control, high capacity, and reliability." - Andrew Dereka, Product Director Thermoelectrics at Laird Thermal Systems

The MBX series has undergone rigorous Telcordia GR-468 CORE qualification tests, ensuring exceptional reliability and long operational lifespan, even in harsh environments. This meets the highest qualification and reliability requirements in the optoelectronic market. Custom-made, the MBX series offers unique sizes, heat dissipation capacities, and energy efficiencies. With solder constructions supporting reflow temperatures up to 280ºC and wire-bondable attachments, this series is suitable for a wide range of optoelectronic applications. Laird Thermal Systems also offers special finishing options, including Au-plated patterns, thermistor connections, and hermetic seals to accommodate non-hermetic packages.
